The difference is magnitude. AI increasingly influences customer outcomes, financial exposure, and regulatory compliance directly. As a result, the cost of ungoverned automation is far higher than it was with OCR.

These controls do not restrict AI. They make it deployable beyond experimentation.
Without Context, AI Fails Quietly
OCR relied on templates and schemas to provide structure. They defined what data should exist, where it should appear, and how it should be validated.
AI requires an equivalent form of structure. That structure is context.
Context includes metadata, known business data, document classification, process state, and business rules. It tells AI what it is doing, why it matters, and what constraints apply.
Without context, AI behaves like OCR without templates: impressive in demonstrations, unreliable in production. With context, AI becomes predictable enough to trust.
Humans Were Never the Problem — They Are the Control
Human involvement in automation is often framed as a temporary compromise. History shows this framing is wrong.
People were never a workaround for bad automation. They were—and remain—a control mechanism.
Human oversight enables learning, correction, and accountability. Removing people too early does not accelerate maturity. It conceals risk.
OCR scaled because people remained part of the process. AI will follow the same path.
Orchestrated AI Is the Difference Between Experiment and Scale
